Be sure not to touch the gold with your bare hands. Oils and dirt from your fingers will inhibit the two metals from forming a bond. Place the foil between tracing paper to cut it, or cut it between the tissue paper it comes wrapped in (see photo 73). To test if your piece is hot enough for the silver and gold to bond, set the blunt end of a bamboo skewer on the metal clay piece. When it starts to smoke and turn black (see photo 74), the piece is at the correct temperature for bonding. Place the gold on top of the silver and tack it down with the burnishing tool (see photo 75).
By using less water and binder, the enamel could resemble oil paint. For this effect, a plastic palette knife is used to trough on the enamel. Wet packing is traditionally used in the champleve technique. Champleve is inlaid enamel. To wet pack a recessed area, start with a teaspoon amount of powdered enamel mixed with a few drops of distilled water and one drop of binding agent. This mixture is packed into low recessed areas of the design by lifting a small amount of the enamel mixture with a plastic spoon, then shoveling it into the low areas with a pusher (dental tool or fine quality watercolor brush).
However, combining it with other materials gives you the opportunity for rich and diverse artistic exploration. The materials often playoff each other in a mutually beneficial way. For example, a ring of gold is beautiful, but a gold ring set with a row of cubic zirconias is stunning, just like the Gold and Cubic Zirconia Ring on page 122. Natural Gemstones for Kiln Firing Because Mother Nature controls the formation of natural gemstones, there is no way to guarantee that a natural stone will survive kiln or torch firing.
