Based on the fitness of a chromosome and the average fitness of the population, the reproduction operator determines, rather randomly, the number of copies, if any, that particular chromosome will have in the next generation. There are many ways of designing this operator; however, the underlying idea is to give the chromosomes with higher fitnesses more chance to be represented in the next generation but leave the decision to a random variable.
