We examine by way of doing. We examine arithmetic by way of doing difficulties. This publication is the 1st quantity of a sequence of books of difficulties in mathematical research. it really is commonly meant for college students learning the fundamental rules of study. although, given its association, point, and choice of difficulties, it will even be an excellent selection for educational or problem-solving seminars, really these aimed toward the Putnam examination.

We are accepting that there are limitations to this, however, and will be offering some of our own interpretations of these accounts. Thus we consider how the trainees create a sense of their own evolving identities as teachers. The psychoanalytic metaphor invoked in this frame compares our interviewees with clients in a psychoanalyst’s surgery laying back on a couch and speaking about their lives. Such a metaphor has been central in the Freudian inspired work of Lacan and Žižek that will feature throughout this book.
Information was also available on how the trainees perceived the various factors that shaped and regulated their changing professional and personal environments. We do not apologise for this partial perspective. Where we address mathematical discourse directly, we are choosing to avoid perspectives in which we suppose that there is a “better” truth of the students’ perspective than the one encapsulated in their own accounts. These accounts provided the rationale to students’ actions. Their on-going transition towards qualification was understood as being a function of the narratives they offered in the interviews.
